Backup and Recovery: Protecting Your Crypto
Your 24-word recovery phrase is the master key to your cryptocurrency. If your Ledger is lost, stolen, or damaged, these words are the only way to recover your funds.
What Is the Recovery Phrase?
When you set up your Ledger, the device generates a unique set of 24 words called a recovery phrase (also known as a seed phrase). These words, in the correct order, can regenerate all of your private keys and restore access to your crypto on any compatible wallet.
How to Store Your Recovery Phrase
- Write it on the recovery sheets included with your Ledger
- Consider a metal backup solution for fire and water resistance
- Store copies in multiple secure locations (safe at home, bank deposit box)
- Never store it digitally - no photos, no cloud storage, no text files
- Never share it with anyone - Ledger support will never ask for it
How to Restore Your Wallet
If you need to restore your wallet on a new Ledger device, select "Restore from recovery phrase" during setup. Enter your 24 words in the correct order on the device. Your accounts and balances will be restored automatically.
